2. "Man is not truly one, but truly two" --Dr. Henry Jekyll in "Henry Jekyll's Full Statement..." (Chapter 10). Greg Buzwell, Curator of Contemporary Literary Archives at the British Library, writes of this central theme of Stevenson's novella, "Gothic fiction had examined the idea of the sinister alter ego or double before on many occasions but Stevenson’s genius with Jekyll and Hyde was to show the dual nature not only of one man but also of society in general. Throughout the story, respectability is doubled with degradation; abandon with restraint; honesty with duplicity. Even London itself [in the novella] has a dual nature..." Explain Buzwell's comments--what does Stevenson reveal about Victorian society through the dualities presented in the novella? If you wish, you may instead explain how the dualities of the novella begin to develop all the way back to the ballads, Blake, Burns, Austen, Wordsworth, etc., and that the novella encapsulates the entire period of the 19th century (you don't need to discuss all the poets we've read...break down your answer into a kind of "early-mid-late" development of conditions, themes, and ideas).

This darkness was all the things that were suppressed during this period of time in England. Mr. Hyde was described as the monster in the story, evil, devilish, and had a criminal instinct. He was also void of any social niceties such as when he committed heinous crimes involving trampling on an innocent girl and Carew’s murder. He also did not show any kind of repentance or remorse for these actions throughout the story. Mr. Hyde’s character is the Dr. Jekyll’s alter ego. This evil side also shows the desire to selfishly dominate Dr. Jekyll empowering the ideal values and character that he has. In the end, Mr. Hyde’s power also shows and how it becomes dominant as the story progresses, and everyone who gets the chance to meet Mr. Hyde associates the encounter with nightmares and the devil.
