Question: According to Freud there are three components to the structure of personality. Name and describe these components.
According to Freud, there are three components to the structure of personality. These three components are responsible for the complex behavior of human beings. The components are: the Id, the Ego and the Superego. There is need to balance all the three components in order to attain a reasonable mental health. People experience psychological battles between the Id and the superego throughout their lifetime. The battle/conflict is often negotiated by the Ego. The psychological conflict is an inherent and persistent part of the human experience. Therefore, the way a person deals with the instant indulgence and the longer-term reward predicament, will determine the character that a person adopts.
The ID works in the illogical and the emotional part of the human mind. The ID can also be referred to as the primeval mind and contains all the basic needs and feelings that a person may have.
