Developmental coordination disorder refers to a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals from infancy and later progresses to adulthood. Therefore, with motor skills being the major impediment, the disorder affects coordination skills as well as fine and gross motor skills, thus preventing the adult from properly performing some daily tasks (United Kingdom National Health Service, 2017). The disorder develops from early infancy leading to the lack of proper development of these skills in adulthood.
The disorder is more prevalent in males and its core symptoms revolve around the ability to learn and execute any coordinated motors skills. Therefore, individuals with developmental coordination disorder have a limited ability to learn these skills from an early age. The initial symptoms detectable in children involve clumsiness, inaccuracy when performing motor skills and slowness. Consequently, this leads to difficulties or delays in learning any new motor skills, balance, and any skills that require coordination by different parts of the body (Wilmut, Du, & Barnett, 2015). Therefore, standard functions such as maintaining posture become difficult since there is a deficit in neuromuscular activity, leading to a difference in walking patterns.
In adults, developmental coordination disorder affects their ability to perform daily activities in their lives. In the case of fine motor skills, the disorder makes it difficult for them to write or perform any self-care activities such as cooking or shopping. Additionally, the lack of proper gross motor skills prevents the individual from being able to control their balance and posture (Scott-Roberts & Purcell, 2018). Such problems involving the judgment of their position in space and depth of surfaces increases their chances of bumping or falling into items. Ultimately, this causes a hesitance by such individuals to involve themselves in any form of physical activity. Therefore, the lack of physical activity caused by the disorder leads to an increased risk for obesity while also lowering the individual’s fitness levels.
