It is a fact that substance use among adolescents coexists with other psychiatric conditions. I agree that co-occurring diagnosis among adolescents can be in terms of mood, anxiety, depression or ODD (Boger, Auerbach & Pechtel, 2014). Adolescence is a crucial period of development that is why substance and psychiatric-related problem are profound, 75 percent of adolescents have been identified with co-occurring diagnosis (Boger, Auerbach & Pechtel, 2014). Severe mood disorder among adults occurs because health care professionals do not diagnose children at young ages. I concur that prolonged drug use form childhood worsen the situation (Boger, Auerbach & Pechtel, 2014)

It's a fact that much adolescence suffers from co-occurring disorders triggered by several events. Adolescents are not fully mature and have not experienced the co-occurring disorder like adults. (Riggs, 2001). Newly adolescent patients are not motivated by treatment despite having psychiatric problems. Young have the limited capacity of coping skills and social skills (Riggs, 2001).

The reason why co-occurring disorder among adolescents needs specialized treatment, which is different from adult clients, is that adolescent is at a higher risk of substance use because of various chronic illnesses that require medication therapy. Medication usually takes a toll on their mental and physical health. The intensive medical intervention can result to misuse of medication (CSAT, 1999).

With substance use disorder, the levels of treatment conditions vary. Some of these variations require a good understanding of overall client assessment to understand various factors like cultural background, age, gender, peer environment and severity of substance abuse among others (TIP, Series No. 32).

Johnny’s’ post explains how the diagnosis is important and caution needs to be taken. Counselors to avoid giving clients unnecessary medication to minimize any physical and psychological damage. Diagnosis or certain drug label can stigmatize adolescents (Boger, Auerbach & Pechtel, 2014). Labeling can have profound effects on adolescents because their health records might affect the person job interview. Precaution should be taken to prevent medical records from becoming public care ethics and legal measured need to be explored before diagnosing and treating adolescents with substance abuse disorder (Boger, Auerbach & Pechtel, 2014).

As posted by Shawn, several factors need to be put into consideration when diagnosing adolescents with substance disorders. A thorough assessment process is important to review the patient history to determine any strong indicators of a co-occurring (SAMHSA, 1999).
