Critical Reflection On “Migration: Global Trends “
Migration has a significant effect on both the places and people involved in it. When supported by legislations and regulations, migrations can lead to sustainable and inclusive development, both for the destination and origin countries, while benefiting the new migrants and their families. The course materials that I will use in this analysis are the reading “Introduction” to World Migration Report 2020, and the film titled “Strangers in Town” by Reuben Aaronson and Steve Lerner. Both resources focus on the issue of migration/immigration and the implications for the destination countries.
The central argument raised by the film “Strangers in Town” reveals that migration is essential. Many people often migrate for a wide array of reasons such as escaping hunger, disease, war, and violence from their home countries, and also to find work and create new lives in the new locations. The migrants can be very influential since they lead to changes in the new country. On the other hand, the central argument in the reading is that international migration has been on the increase. Currently, around 3.5% of the world population are living in a county where they were not born (World Migration Report, 2012). Migration often involves movement from developing to developed countries like France, the United States, and the UK. The film reveals that the migrants who moved to Garden City, Kansas, lead to many positive effects like the improved economy and more labor but several challenges also arose (Aaronson & Lerner, 2019). The movement resulted in increased demand for infrastructure, education, social services, and housing.
The film also reveals that culture shock is a significant issue facing new migrants. Most of them are faced with cultural shock since they have not been prepared on how to survive in the new environment. Other issues include racism and discrimination. For instance, the films reveal an anti-migrant group that wanted to attack the new migrants who were living in an apartment in Garden City (Aaronson & Lerner, 2019). According to the film, most migrants want to get work and to live independently rather than depending on social services.
