Personally, the principal foundations of an everlasting romantic relationship include love, trust, and mending each other’s wounds. However, many relationships fail because of previous bad experiences which caused wounds. Sometimes, the wounds remain unhealed for an extended period, which can lead to behaviors and actions that can damage the relationships. In this paper, we shall reflect on failed relationships and their connection with biology and psychology.
The first topic discussed in class that is connected to failed relationships is neglect and insensitive treatments. Beatty (2021) explained that these factors could alter the hormonal balance in the body, leading to problematic behavioral issues. Consequently, this can impact relationships resulting from decaying. Neglect is associated with diminished affection for one’s partner.
Based on Floyd’s Affection Exchange Theory, human beings naturally crave affection. It is an innate behavior that leads to distinguished experiences that can be difficult to face without the partner’s affection. This is produced by the suprarenal glands and peaks its release in the morning. Its levels gradually diminish as the day ends, leading to difficulties in facing stresses at the end of the day. Floyd found out that partners with optimal affectionate behaviors toward one another have shown the most significant decrease in cortisol levels. Therefore, this can be inversely related to relationship satisfaction.
We shall relate this to one of my friends, who is an extreme introvert. She did not have a boyfriend or any lover even without a label since birth. Upon entering college, she became very popular because of her intelligence and beauty. Many men tried to court her, but she did not like these things since she was an introvert. She wanted a deep and personal approach to courting and disapproved of any attempted superficial actions. One guy was able to catch her attention, and he courted her for over five months. He was serious about his feelings for her, and they both had similar hobbies and dreams in life. Because of this, my frie...
