This study examines the efforts aimed at providing fresh water for communities that do not have readily available water for domestic purposes through desalination technologies, particularly desalination plants. The authors argue that in spite of the fact that the technologies that are involved in the desalination plants are quite intensive, there are challenges that are still encountered. One of these challenges is the fact that the desalination plants require a lot of energy to run and yet energy is quite expensive besides having a negative impact on the environment.
