Energy is needed to move. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the energy currency which is utilized during activities. It is produced by three different energy pathways, namely, the phosphagen-creatine system (ATP-PC), anaerobic glycolysis, and aerobic glycolysis. ATP-PC has the fastest method of generating energy. It is vital for the onset of movement and during short-term and high-intensity changes for the first 30 seconds. ATP-PC is utilized during a 100-m dash, weight-lifting, or throwing a ball. Anaerobic glycolysis utilizes the energy stored in glucose to produce ATP. This system is utilized for activities that last for 30 seconds to three minutes maximum. The aerobic system uses oxygen to oxidize fats and carbohydrates to produce ATP. It takes place in the mitochondria and produces the energy needed for long-duration exercises that exceed the capacity of ATP-PC and anaerobic glycolysis systems (Koeppen & Stanton, 2017).
Marathon utilizes the energy produced by the aerobic system, and it requires efficient utilization of fat and glycogen. The athlete should prevent running at a faster pace since this relies on anaerobic metabolism to produce ATP. Thus, producing excessive lactate that accumulat...
