Signature Assignment Reflection Paper
The three competencies focused on the various prevention and management strategies that can be applicable to oral health depending on the followed protocols on risk assessment, preventive oral hygiene for the development of a personalized plan depending on the needs of the patient, and prevention of oral disease and its management depending on the result of the risk assessment. In these topics, I have learned how to identify the level of risk that the patient is in, whether he or she falls in the high-risk category for example, and what I would personally recommend based on all the comprehensive learnings that I already have. In connection to this example, I would recommend a toothpaste that contains stannous fluoride which helps prevent risk for those who are already considered carriers, and also suggest the use of Proxa brush for interdental brushing. Knowing the risk factors is also important because if for example the patient is a smoker, there is also an associated increased risk in having periodontitis, oral cancer, and oral caries. These patient characteristics and behavior also impact the way their oral health is and its possible effects in the future.
There were many learnings with this activity, but there were also challenges that I have encountered along the way.
