Upon his return home, Jordan reeked of alcohol and marijuana and was caught by his mother. Shocked and appalled by her son's recent behavior, she grounded him for two weeks.
What advice would you give Monica about her son’s recent behavior?

According to Erickson’s concept of psychosocial development, adolescents experience identity versus role confusion from 12 to 18 years, thus making it challenging to weigh the risks and rewards of their actions. As noted in the case scenario, Jordan spends most of the time analyzing what his peers think of him. In this way, Jordan seeks to establish uniqueness and develop a sense of identity that is hopefully acceptable to peer groups and society. The adolescent’s brain is significantly undergoing social, cognitive, and biological changes, thus showing his inclination to seek autonomous explorations coupled with unruly behaviors. More specifically, the adolescent brain undergoes prefrontal cortex changes characterized by the rise in dopamine input. As Jordan’s prefrontal dopamine fibers augment in density, he becomes more susceptible to external influences, both negative and positive. The adolescent brain weighs risks and rewards based on what makes them feel good (Hoops & Flores 2017). In this way, Jordan feels good when engaging in intense experiences and risky behaviors.
