While growing up, everyone has a dream of doing something worthwhile with their lives. I saw myself as many things when I was young. The world was there for me to conquer, and it seemed like nothing could stop me. However, as I grew older, I realized that I have to choose a field of specialization. This point in life comes with a lot of confusion because one is put in a position where they have to let go of their childhood dreams and aspirations. Society tells you to settle on something, and no one bothers asking you whether you like it or not. For me, this moment had me choose sociology. However, I was unsettled and unsatisfied with the choice. Therefore, unlike what many people choose to do and settle into a field they have no inspiration for, I decided to transfer to another field. I chose to transfer to the field of social work, and the transfer was synonymous with finding one’s perfect dating partner on Tinder. Everything checked, and I knew I was in the right field. With social work, there was no motivation for coming to the field. The transfer to the field was nothing short of serendipitous.
I found the field very interesting and one that the world needs if principles of love, peace, unity, equality, and tolerance are to become real everywhere. The field of social work mainly seeks to help the world remember its human aspect, which I consider one of the greatest priorities of social work. The field helps the world remember that it needs to strive for the good of everyone and not for a privileged few. Also, it seeks to demystify certain issues that have become major impediments to social progress in society, including racism. Racism is a social issue that continues to influence how people relate and react to the issues of the world. As a Chinese student studying in America, I happen to have experienced instances when people are looking down on me because of where I come from or how I look. However, people of African descent happen to experience the worst of it. Anti-Black racism is a social scourge that seeks to demean people of African descent, and to show them that they are less than other races. It is an evil that continues to influence how people relate and also casts some groups of people as inferior to others.
When someone is not racist, it is easy to assume or even say that it has no impact on oneself. However, racism, whether anti-Black or any other, impacts all our lives. First, it forces me to be careful about what I say. Often, I have things to say that are not motivated by any racist gene in my body.
