Youth Engagement Program for Middle and High School Students

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

First, share your previous experiences of civic engagement, or volunteering. Describe the identity groups and community that were supported by your efforts. How were they served? If you worked with a specific organization, be sure to mention them and give them some recognition. What types of experiences did you engage in? What did you get out of it? Do you recommend the experience to others?
Build a defense of why this is an important social issue in your community that needs addressing by completing the following steps:
Perform a Google search of the internet to find what Government and local data is available on the issue or the group of people it affects. Does it affect a subgroup of people more than others? [For example: youth, elders, different races, cultures or genders?]. Take note of the data you find.
Perform a Google search of the internet of community and political groups [Republican, Democrat, Green Party, etc...] which address this issue in their platform. What do they have to say? What are their perspectives?
Find four scholarly articles from the University of Arizona Global Campus Library in which the social issue is generally discussed.
Report this data fully in your paper/proposal.
Some of the information you gather may be in data form. Here are some examples of how data can be presented in your paper/proposal:
A table of all the variables you found (if you select this option, please do not copy and paste tables from the website. Rather, create your own table with all of your variables).
[Choose - Insert/Table in MS Word; add as many columns and rows as you like]:
Location: [examples] San Diego, Kern County, etc…
Percentage --- Number (n=)
Population (male):  45% --- 45,000
Population (female): 55% --- 55,000
Median Income: $40,000
% of Population with College Degree: 30% -- 30,000
Or you can avoid a table and prepare a bullet point list of all the variables you found…
Location:
Population:
Male – 45% (n=45,000)
Female – 55% (n=55,000)…etc.
Now complete the following:
Section 2 - Research existing community engagement projects which address the social issue you have chosen:
Perform a Google internet search based on your social issue for example “community engagement youth” or “community programs hunger”
Find two existing examples of programs that address the social issue you have chosen. [US programs are preferred, however programs from another country are permitted.]
Present these two programs, including where it is, whom it serves, and any information you can get on effectiveness and how it has helped the community.
Section 3 - The Community Engagement Proposal/Final Paper
Similar to the programs you researched in Section 2, create your own program and write a proposal to apply for the $100,000 government grant. For this part of the assignment you are asked to get creative and design a program that – if money was not an issue -- you think would be practical to implement and would help address the social issue you selected. Sections 1 and 2 will be integrated into this proposal.

Youth Engagement: After-School Program for Middle and High School Students
Previous Experience in Volunteerism
My experience with volunteering was eye-opening, enjoyable, and fulfilling. I volunteered at the Pentecostal Baptist Church, which had a youth engagement program that focused mainly on children. The goal was to ensure that these children were fully engaged in meaningful activities during summer to avoid idleness, which usually promotes indiscipline and other vices among students when they are out of school. In addition to supporting young people, their families were also involved because the church believes in holistically supporting the child by involving their families. I applaud the church for being so family-centered because they made sure that even as they were engaging children, they did not sideline their families.
The primary responsibilities involved providing food for the children and their families, organizing field trips, offering tutoring services, and using music & art to keep the children engaged. My main duties were serving meals to the children and their families. I also engaged with them in learning through the tutoring program and participated in the field trips. What I gathered from these engagements is that serving others is the most fulfilling experience that one can get. I also learned that volunteer services play a significant role in driving change in our communities. There are a lot of social issues in our communities, and it is up to everyone to contribute to addressing these issues by donating our money, time, and/or voices. I would recommend this experience to others. Since this experience, I have been encouraging the people around me to volunteer because it is not only beneficial to the community but also to the individual volunteering to serve others.
1 Executive Summary
The proposed program is an after-school program that provides students in middle and high school in Delaware with after-school tutoring and music lessons. This program is necessary because it will ensure students are not engaging in vices or faring poorly in academics. Currently, about 51% and 43% of middle and high school students are gambling. In addition, the school dropout rate among middle school students in Delaware is 15.4%, which is quite alarming because the overall school dropout rate in the state is 1.3%. The cause of these issues is a lack of meaningful activities to engage in and limited adult supervision during after-school hours. However, after-school tutoring and music lessons can reduce the likelihood of students engaging in addictive behaviors or dropping out of school without a high school diploma.
The program will offer math and reading lessons daily and music lessons every week. The organization will collaborate with the University of Delaware's Suzuki program and the Anthony Penna Charitable Fund instrument donation program to achieve its goals. To support this program, the organization is requesting a $100,000 grant. The outcomes that will be achieved include improved grades, discipline, and musical skills in t...
