Some historians refer to the war between the American colonies and Britain as the American Revolution. Others say it should be known as the War for American Independence. Which term do you think is more fitting? Why? Be sure to support your opinion.
The war between the American colonies and Britain should be known as the American revolution. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a revolution as “the overthrow or renunciation of one government or ruler and the substitution of another by the governed.” The above definition helps to define the state of the British monarch and the British settlers in America at the time. The settlers sought to change the system and adopt a new one with new people in charge. Their goal was to establish their social order, and not be under the British order. They were not slaves or under the forced hand of the British monarch. However, they were unhappy with the system and yearned for one that protected their lives, liberty, and guaranteed them a fair share of the available resources. The settlers were unhappy with the political system and thus sought to have it overthrown. Chengte (34) notes that a revolution results in a “sudden violent change in the political system,” and this did happen in America. Freedom was not in question but a change in the governing system.
