Entry 6: A Summary and Discussion on Bloomberg’s Editorial Article
The article Debates Don’t Matter the Way People Think They Do has an agenda to dismiss Trump’s efforts to ace the poll through debate. Although debates provide a platform to state political plans, they don’t foresee who will most likely win or lose the elections. As a context, the article lays out Trump’s debate shenanigans: assuming Biden has cognitive issues and would withdraw on the debates, demanding an additional round of debate, and setting the debate schedule weeks earlier. Trump has been behind the presidential poll and it seems that he is seeking redemption through debate plans. However, despite one’s effort, debates in democratic politics do not ensure winning (Bloomberg).
The author’s bias lies in the implication that Trump is trying to manipulate the debate system but debates are not free tickets to winning. It is stated in the article that “a campaign in trouble will figure it has little to lose by trying” to demand four debates, something that is usually requested by the candidate losing in polls. Later in the article, it says that “general-election debates rarely have any significant effect on election results (Bloomberg).”

Entry 7: Rangel vs. Lacey: Who Argued Better?
Rangle and Lacey have presented their opposing sides in the talks of reinstating the draft. Both have a different approach to persuading the audience with their arguments. While Rangel emotionally appeals to the reader, Lacey is more on the factual approach.
I would say Lacey has a stronger argument than Rangel. The latter does provide facts and pieces of evidence to support his stand. However, the whole argument revolves only on one thing: imposing guilt on the civilians. Rangel's point would have been powerful if laid out with firmer arguments and adequate factual pieces of evidence.
What made Lacey's argument stronger is that it rebuts the vital points of Rangel's: using mental health and the minority to guilt the civilians, the military not composing mostly of minorities, and the cost inefficiency of universal national service. Moreover, Lacey backs his claims with statistics and historical accounts. For instance, he explains that the same troops have to go back and forth in Afghanistan and Iraq because they are more familiar with the environment and it lessens the casualty that the new troops might incur (Lacey). This makes his stand greater in the foundation and has more impact than that of Rangel&rsqu...
