Understanding the significance of studies in real-life setting is a crucial skill for any health care provider. It allows him to be able to make informed decisions based on evidence and possibly replicate such results in his workplace. This principle, also known as Evidence-based Practice (EBP) requires a healthcare provider to be able to analyze sources, determine context-fit or applicability, as well as critique the statistical significance of such studies in his workplace. In this study, the author would focus on understanding the statistical significance of Roddy’s and Ganz’s article in the hospital setting. Since statistical significance can be affected by a number of factors, the specifics of the research would be critiqued in greater detail in the succeeding sections. Nonetheless, the author believes that both articles are statistically significant in their application to the modern hospital setting.
Statistical Significance of Studies
In both of the articles at hand, the authors aimed at understanding the causality or correlation of a dependent variable (DV) to an Independent Variable (IV). On the one hand, Roddy et al. (2006), aimed to understand the similarity between the researchers’ proposed SOR and traditional methods. This includes the advantages, possibility of being upgraded, and applicability to global aspects of healthcare provision. On the other hand, Ganz, et al’s (2009) research focused on the understanding of whether personal demographic or professional characteristics of ICU Nurses are associated with established Evidence-based practices.
Sampling Size
One of the main determinants of statistical significance is sampling size. An insufficient or unrepresentative sampling size could cause lead to different errors or biases that could affect the significance of the research. In Roddy, et al’s (2006) article, the authors gathered 10 (n=10) individual recommendations from nursing practitioners and scholars using the Delphi technique. Since the objectives and methods (i.e., Delphi Technique) of the study does not require an extensive and diverse sample size, this increases the reliability of the sampling size. However, it would have been better if the panel that analyzed the papers were gathered randomly to improve the representativeness of the population.
In contrast, the article was written by Ganz, et al. (2009), utilized a sample size of 218 practicing ICU Nurses. The participants were recruited using convenient sampling for the sake of practicality. In this case, despite the large population of respondents, the author of this paper believes that convenient sampling could lead to some form of sampling bias. Thus, it would have been better if the respondents were gathered through random or stratified random sampling.
Experimental Design and Research Variables
Experimental designs are research variables can also affect the statistical significance of the study. Without a means of verifying the relationships of the variables and data, the risks of having disparities between the true results and the obtained results increas...
