Patrick F. McDevitt in his book Muscular Catholicism: Nationalism, Masculinity, and Gaelic Team Sports 1884-1916, (edited by Tony Ballantyne and Antoinette Burton) published in the year 2006 examines how the Irish used contact sports to set themselves apart from the British; in a quest to express their Irish culture and to rebel against the British culture (Ballantyne and Burton 2005).
