Introduction
Changes in the health care system meant that there was a need to meet new demands and different stakeholders worked together to offer recommendations to transform healthcare. Advancing health and achieving higher education levels for nurses, increasing the share of nurses with a baccalaureate degree were issues to improve nursing education and enhance the quality of care. Disseminating best practices and adopting IOM recommendations will likely result in better patient outcomes in an environment where nurses practice with fewer barriers. The Michigan action coalition has adopted recommendations on the nursing profession's future to advance health care and the nursing profession.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the IOM report and Future of Nursing
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) partnered with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to report on delivering quality health care and enhancing nurses' roles. The joint initiative to respond to the need to transform nursing practice qualified nursing professionals also focused on more advanced practice and enhanced care practice implementation (Hassmiller & Reinhard, 2019). The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action focused on transforming healthcare and supporting high-quality patient-centered care where nurses are highly trained, and there is interprofessional collaboration. There is also the use of data and information to optimize care delivery. The evidence-based report emphasized health care reform and the expanded roles of nurses in the future.
Four "Key Messages" that structure the IOM Report recommendations
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) complied recommendations on the future of the nursing profession in the “Future of Nursing” report. the Key Messages" that structure the IOM Report recommendations are nurses being allowed to practice to the full extent of their education and training, nurses achieving higher levels of education, nurses working as full partners with other health professionals, and effective workplace planning that allows them to leverage data and improved information infrastructure (Hallock, 2019).
There are different nursing practice entries, and the proposed changes in nursing education highlight the need to practice to the full extent of their education and training. Besides education and training, there is an emphasis on lifelong learning. Baccalaureate education is one path to prepare a registered nurse where there is an emphasis on meeting changing health care needs. One example to enhance education and training is the states adopting university programs that increase the proportion of baccalaureate-prepared nurses. Research supports evidence that nurses’ education and nursing practice improve the quality of care and patient safety(Neff et al., 2018).. Besides education and training, there is a focus on removing barriers to practice to promote the nursing practice, education, and research.
