Soft Skill: Coachability
Soft skills are interpersonal skills that determine the kind of relationships that a person creates and sustains with others. They complement an individual’s expertise or knowledge. Coachability refers to a person’s ability to receive and apply constructive feedback and criticism to improve his or her workplace performance (Mayer, Dale, & Brent, 2019). In particular, the Department of Management should add a new soft skills management class to teach coachability, which should begin in the fall of 2023.
Coachability enables individuals to keep improving in their jobs or careers. Currently, employers are not only searching for highly qualified candidates, but they want people who are willing to be criticized constructively so that they can perform optimally, increasing the firm’s productivity. Students should be prepared how to receive and act on the feedback they get from their managers. For instance, they should learn how to appreciate feedback and use it to improve their performance. Some individuals are defensive, which denies them the chance of reacting to crucial advice (Manzoni, 2016). If an employee is dissatisfied with the feedback given, they should understand how to ask for additional information constructively without engaging in irrelevant arguments.
