Social Factors that Contribute to and/or Perpetuate Addiction
Introduction
The social issue selected is addiction. The major focus is on the social factors contributing to and/or perpetrating addiction. It is important to study the topic because of its complexity. Various factors are responsible for addiction, like poverty, trauma, and peer pressure. Due to the issue's complexity, a study of the factors is needed to develop the most appropriate interventions to address addiction. Since addiction has negative consequences on society, it needs to be addressed. A study on the same is a major step towards getting the various stakeholders to focus on ways of addressing the problem.
Social Science Resources
To investigate the issue, four social science resources will be utilized. The first article is titled “Is there an association between seeing incidents of alcohol or drug use in films and young Scottish adults' alcohol or drug use? A cross-sectional study.” It examines if exposure to depictions of alcohol or drug use in films is associated with young Scottish adults' drug use. The study establishes that young adults exposed to such depictions are more likely to engage in heavy drinking and drug use. The article is related to the second article titled, “The Way One Thinks Affects the Way One Drinks: Subjective Evaluations of Alcohol Consequences Predict Subsequent Change in Drinking Behavior.” Here, the authors explore the link between subjective evaluations of alcohol consequences and subsequent changes in drinking behavior. The researchers establish that people who perceive the negative consequences of alcohol use to be more severe are more likely to minimize their drinking behavior. The two articles demonstrate that perception is critical in influencing how people view drinking. When people perceive alcohol use positively, there are more likely to engage in drinking and hence have higher chances of addiction.
The third source is “Opioid Addiction Stigma: The Intersection of Race, Social Class, and Gender.” The article investigates whether public stigma toward people addicted to opioids varies depending on race, social class, and the gender of the individual using the opioids. The research establishes that various social identities like race, gender and social class shape opioid addiction stigma. Because of stigma, people are discouraged from seeking assistance, minimizing their access to healthcare resources. The paper advocates for a multifaced approach while addressing opioid addiction. The article is closely related to “The impact of race, gender, and heroin use on opioid addiction stigma.” Here, the authors investigate how race, gender, and heroin use affect the perceptions of opioid addiction stigma. The researchers establish that White females are rated with higher responsibility for opioid use compared to Black females. In comparison, Black males were rated with higher responsibility for opioid use that Black females.
The four articles are appropriate for investigating the issue because they offer up-to-date findings that are up-to-date. The article...
