You will present your analysis in the form of a video (((no more than 10mins))) that will include the following:
1. Discussion of the social, historical, political context in which the art was created (keep it brief but informative)
2. Background information on the artist(s) (keep it brief but informative)
3. Explanation of the artist’s purpose. For example, are they trying to inform us of something, argue something, etc. (keep it brief but informative)
4. Evaluation of whether the piece is/was effective in achieving its purpose (provide support for your position)
5. Argument/evaluation of whether or not it is “good”/”valuable” art
You must use relevant aesthetic principles from 1-7 (use only the ones that apply to your argument and do not use #8) to make your argument, as well as supporting your argument by making specific reference back to evidence from the piece of art.
For example,
“The song “Sun City” is valuable according to the aesthetic principle that states “Objects are aesthetically valuable if they have the capacity to help bring about social or political change”. When the artists sang,
Ain't gonna play sun city
Relocation to phony homelands
Separation of families i can't understand
23 million can't vote because they're black
We're stabbing our brothers and our sisters in the back
they were drawing attention to the conditions that existed under Apartheid and urging others to stand up in support of Black South Africans.”
