Challenges Faced by Filipina Women
Currently, the position of women in the Philippines can be considered the best contradiction compared to other countries. Women are empowered and advanced in education, legislation, politics, and professionalism. In addition, the education system of the Philippines provides a competitive equality curriculum in which women tend to thrive better than males. The government of the Philippines introduced a system that inspires equality in healthcare, career, and education. In 1975, the Philipines government established The National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW) to serve as an advisory body to the president. The NCRFW's responsibilities included evaluating, reviewing, and recommending priorities and measures to integrate women into social, cultural, and economic development at international, regional, and local levels. Thus, the government of Philipinnes is committed to inspiring and empowering its women economically, academically, and socially. However, despite all the support, Filipino women face challenges in the Philippines.
First, even though women are socially and culturally empowered gender-based violence is a pervasive problem in the Philippines. According to United Nations Populations Funds ( UNFPA,2019),1 in 20 girls aged between 15-49 has experienced sexual violence in the Philippines. This can be male patriarchal traditions in the country, in which men believed they are superior to women and they were treated as objects to please men. In addition, men felt they owned women and thus, subjected them to physical and sexual violence. Gender-based violence has a negative impact on women. It reduces their self-esteem, hurts their dignity, and disempowers women socially and economically.
Secondly, in the economy, women are treated unequally more than men in the Philippines. Even though women's labor participation in the Philippines is close to 50%, their earning rate is lower than that of men. Consequently, Filipina women are restricted from entering the labor force due to gender stereotyping ( JICA,2008). This can be attributed to their reproductive roles compared to men. In addition, Filipino women face discrimination and are subject to minimum wage making them easily preferred people to work for other countries.
Further, due to the lack of employment in the Philippines, women are exploited for minimum wage abroad. Women often seek greener pastures in overseas countries as Overseas Filipino Workers ( OFWs) to feed and cater to their families needs. Women have always outnumbered men in working abroad.
