SPEECH TITLE: THE FUTURE
by NAME
General Purpose: to inform, to persuade, or to entertain
The speech seeks to inform and hopefully inspire high school graduates as they embark on the next journey through life.
Target audience:
High school graduates
Specific Purpose Statement: a statement of what you want your audience to do when you finish your speech.
I firmly believe that we need to share our insecurities, loss, failures, and tears with someone, along with the laughter.
Main point/thesis statement: a one-sentence summary of your speech.
Failures don't define us; instead, how a person will respond will determine one's character.
INTRODUCTION
The introduction should be written out word for word. Use complete sentences in your outline. The introduction should include the following:
1.Attention getter;
Many of us will go through life counting our success, no matter how big or small they may be.
2.Preview of the speech;
As you graduate from high school, this marks the end of a chapter in your life and the beginning of a new one. By graduating, every one of you has attained a level of mastery in academics that will form the foundation of your professional and personal lives. Your journeys thus far have their fair share of failures and losses. Also, some of you won't get into the college of your choice and will experience the dark side of life.
3.Establish the credibility and goodwill of the speaker: state your qualification (experience/research) to speak about this topic.
My name is Joshua Ludwig, a Psychology professor at the University of Harvard
BODY
I.A single complete sentence expressing the main point of this section of the speech.
In the next few months, each of you will have to make a choice that will impact the direction of your life
A.Subpoint (As with main points, subpoints should be written in full sentences.)
A choice is the ability to make a comprehensive decision while presented with two or more options. The psychological aspect of choice explores the subconscious motivation to make a decision.
Some of you have a singular motivation to attend an IVY league school to make your parents proud, which is understandable. Others want to attend a school to take advantage of their top-of-the-line facilities in a certain department. All reasons are valid; however, be keen not to lose the expression of free will in the process.
II.A single complete sentence expressing the main point of this section of the speech.
