Hello everyone, and welcome to my speech. I am certain some of you have visited the British Museum (BM), watched it on the news or read about it online or in newspapers and magazines. Public museums provide the chance for discovery, marvel, and awe. A museum like BM is a place where anybody can study our various cultural artefacts and our heritage. BM fosters science and the arts, triggers discussions on challenging topics such as racism, and provides people with a feeling of shared heritage. In a community constantly impacted by disasters, it is increasingly important to preserve the BM for us to learn more about our cultural heritage.
The specific rationale for preparing this presentation was to inform the audience concerning the need to comprehend BM’s risk management and disaster planning approaches. Under the 1963 British Museum Act, the BM trustees are accountable to parliament for the custody and care of the collection and for making them accessible to the public. The collection objects are well-kept for the public benefit in the present and future. The conservation purpose is to lessen the decrease of public benefit triggered by the deterioration of the collection. Therefore, risk management and disaster planning are important to ensure that the collections in the museum are safe.
The BM is a state-funded museum devoted to human history and culture. It is amongst the finest museums globally, with a broad collection premised on the collection of eighteenth-century antiquarians. However, it has currently developed to include an exceptional selection of objects globally and depicts human history from the ancient period. The BM functions as a depository of artworks and movable cultural heritage. The collections comprise objects that are meant for public view. Therefore, museum professionals are mandated to preserve these collections to ensure their safety (Bülow et al., 2018). This care guarantees the protection of the materials from daily wear and safeguarding collections against unforeseen events, categorized as preventive conservation. BM needs to manage risk and disaster for it to preserve collections.
Ten agents of deterioration are the most prevalent and preventable challenges that trigger permanent harm to any collection. Because BM has diverse collections, they need various preservation methods for the various artefacts (Blagoev et al., 2018).
