Zombie Viruses in the Field of Microbiology
Follow the rules and create a presentation based on the instructions about Microbiology! !!!!!!!do not need a PPT!!!!!!5 min speech!!!!!!!!!
Near the end of the semester (December 5), you will combine all the
storytelling skills discussed in class in order to present a story orally to the class. These short
presentations should be approximately five minutes long. Strategies for effective presentations
will be discussed in class (see "course outline" section of syllabus). Oral presentations will be
graded on overall clear scientific communication, including successful implementation of the
following skills (which will be discussed at length through the course):
1. Finding the story
2. Having an engaging beginning & clear ending
3. Keeping the story focused
4. Including meaningful connections
5. Using language of an appropriate tone and level
Contrary to what we believe, the story of zombie viruses (and zombies in general) is more common in the microscopic world. For example, studies have shown that microbes frequently produce poisonous substances to fight one another within the small spaces of our stomachs; I’m sure we know this since one of our body's primary functions is to maintain homeostasis and prevent anything that could cause imbalance within our systems.
However, according to Balskus, a chemical biologist at Harvard University, Colibactin stands out among these chemical weapons since it also produces various DNA mutations. For easier reference, Colibactin is produced by the common bacteria E. coli and is considered a genotoxic metabolite, which causes various mutations within the body. In other words, these are some of the most common causes of cancer within our own bodies.
However, as opposed to what we typically imagine bacterial toxins doing inside microbial commun...
