Implementation of IOM
The healthcare sector required a closer consideration because of the arising complications of health within the United States’ population. Availability of quality healthcare to the diverse population in the States was seen as among the main solutions that could last. Various stakeholders had found it important to expand the role of the providers of healthcare including the primary care physicians, pharmacists and specifically nurses (Boswell, Boswell & Cannon, 2014). This resulted to the coming together of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to build up a vision that would transform the system of healthcare and help to address the pertaining matters.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation abbreviated as RWJF decided to approach IOM in the year 2008, for the two to create an establishment and form an initiative for a span of two years that was concerned with the future of nursing. In addition, the initiative was mainly purposed to fulfill the mission of producing a report that would have recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint. This would give potentiality to the nursing department while the report was to include the alterations of institutional, as well as public policies at both local and state levels. Thus, a particular committee was given the responsibility of scrutinizing and producing a number of recommendations that would relate to specific issues. The work of the committee was to enable and enhance the production of the report. The aim was targeted on identifying significant roles of nurses to design and implement a more efficient healthcare system. The committee was quick to point out issues like reconceptualizing the nurses’ duties in the context of the entire workforce (Glanz, Rimer & Viswanath, 2008). Moreover, the committee mentioned the nurse shortage, the societal issues and the present and upcoming technology. Expansion of the nursing faculty was seen as an effective move, as well as developing the capacity of nursing schools. The nursing education was also to be redesigned in order to ensure the production of enough number of nurses, ready and well prepared to meet the present and future demands of healthcare. There were recommendations of investigating the innovative solutions relating to health professional learning and care delivery via positioning focus on the nurses and their service delivery. It was found commendable also to retain and attract the well informed nurses in the department of complex care that included acute, ambulatory, primary care, long term care, community and public health.
