The Bloods
The Bloods is one of the oldest and the most popular street gang in the United States. The gang is based in Los Angeles where most of its members reside. They traffic drugs, murder, theft and other criminal activities that bring them easy money. Like other gangs, the bloods gang was formed spontaneously after which it got integrated through planning and conflict. Their most popular means of planning their activities include face to face meetings and they prefer moving in groups of several gang members or security against other rival street gangs and security agents. Most members of the gang are African Americans and due to the close social connections among American Americans, the groups have strong leadership hierarchies that enforce the gang’s ideologies, motivate new members and guard their territory from other gangs.
Due to the complexity of the activities carried out by the gang, strong leadership and organizational structure is a critical part of the Bloods. Structures of leadership in the gang may appear in diverse forms depending on which area the members are affiliated to, the West coast or the East coast (Brzenchek, Pieper & Plonczynski, 2017). In both West and East coast, the gang uses a paramilitary like leadership structure which comes in two distinct styles, the Southside brim and the nine trey gangsters. In the South brim paramilitary structure, the Triple OG is the highest ranking gang member and supreme leaders followed by the OG who is most likely the deputy. Then there is the baby OG, OYG, young gangster, OBG and baby gangster as the lowest ranking gang members in that order. In the Nine Trey Gangster formation, The Godfather is the supreme leader and the highest ranking member followed by the big 020 low 020 then 5 stat General all the way to one-star general who is the lowest ranking member.
Gang members in different parts of the United States may also choose to use traditional organizational ranks including, captains, lieutenants and ministers. The leaders of the gang who are known as original gangers or Godfather make most of the decisions affecting the larger gang and are always in contact with leaders from different cities (Randle & Bichler, 2017). The Bloods leadership and the nature of its members is so complex that the police and other security agents find it very difficult to track down the group members.
