Democratic Dissent in the Film "The Square"

Thesis Proposal Instructions:

Find a famous documentary film in English about Democratic Dissent (Not any Bush and Iraq war documentary films) and critique it with the ideas of 2 PowerPoints I give.
In the proposal for your final paper, you should give an overview of what your final paper will look like. Though your project will evolve between now and the final submission, it is important to have a plan in place to guide you through the writing/researching process. In the proposal, you need to identity and explain three components of your final paper:
1. The specific artifact you will be critiquing and its significance.
2. The theoretical framework and/or specific concepts you plan to use to analyze the artifact. This includes how they are applicable to your artifact.
3. A research question or a thesis statement, which you should justify in some way.
Requirements
• Double spaced, 11- or 12-point font, one-inch margin
• 1-page max
• Submit the proposal as a “.docx” via email.
Suggestions & Reminders
• Avoid overusing language that communicates excessive uncertainty, such as:
o “I’m thinking about doing…”
o “I might…”
o “I will try to…”
• A good alternative to the language of uncertainty is to say you “plan” do something. Also, you can simply say that you “will” do something.
• Look at this proposal as the first step in writing your essay.
• Make sure there is consistency between the three components of your final paper.
• Be as specific as you can!
• Don’t waste space on heading with my name and the class information. Merely put your name in the “heading” area.
• For establishing the significance of your artifact, you may consider:
o Do you see it as representative of a trend or something unique?
o Is it something that can be contrasted with something else?
• You can choose to use a theoretical framework from another class, but your essay must use concepts from rhetorical studies.

Introduction
The Square is a 2013 documentary film directed by Jehane Noujaim that chronicles the Egyptian revolution of 2011, which resulted in the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak (Fisher, 2014). The film provides a vivid portrayal of the diverse groups of people who participated in the revolution, their motivations, and the challenges they faced. This proposal seeks to explore the theoretical framework of the film, which centers on the concepts of democratic dissent and identification vs. division.
Research Question
How does the film The Square illustrate the role of identification and division in democratic dissent during the Egyptian revolution of 2011?
The film shows how the revolutionaries used identification and division as tactical tools to achieve their goals. They identified themselves as part of a larger movement for democracy and used various tactics to build solidarity and create a sense of community (Bradshow, 2014). However, the film also shows how division...
