Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses (RNs) with practice skills and competencies in assessing, diagnosing, and managing or treating psychological health issues for individuals across the lifespan. Becoming a PMHNP would enable me to achieve the goal of promoting family and community health outcomes via assessing, diagnosing, and treating individuals and families with substance or psychiatric disorders. I would also be in a position to assist individuals with a high susceptibility to mental health issues and thus prevent the advancement of the illness. As a PMHNP, I will employ skillsets to offer holistic patient-centered care, including providing individualized, group, or family therapy and prescribing medication to impact their health outcomes positively. Instead of simply managing the illness, I would be able to take time to interact with the patient to assist them in achieving their wellness and recovery goals. Becoming a PMHNP supports my career goals because I want to be able to practice in multidisciplinary healthcare settings. The qualification enables the mental health practitioner to effectively partner and collaborate with other professionals in diverse disciplines, including nutrition, social work, the justice system, endocrinology, neurology, and psychology. An orientation towards collaboration and partnership is a strength that would support my career goals.
