Why do you want to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and how will it benefit you?
- I have been a RN in the Newborn ICU (NICU) for over 4 years now at the University of Utah and want to take my career to the next level. I want to continue learning and expand my education in this neonatal intensive care setting.
How does the course fit your skill set?
- I have had over 4 years as a RN in the NICU. I have excelled since I have been working here including becoming a charge nurse last year. I believe I possess sharp critical thinking skills that with the proper education will allow me to become a great advanced practitioner.
How do you stand out from the crowd - e.g. work experience?
- I have 2 bachelors degrees including 1 in Neuroscience from Westminster College and the other in Nursing from the University of Utah. I also have 3 years of experience before I began working as a RN as a Lab Technician and the Animal Colony Manager doing research focusing on investigating biomarkers of response from ongoing clinical trials evaluating investigational oncolytic viruses in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with advanced melanoma.
What are you aspiring to be/do in your future career?
I am inspiring to become a neonatal nurse practitioner and to continue working with the neonatal population.
Below are the statement goals for the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program:
-Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs) provide comprehensive care to high-risk newborn infants and their families.
-As a doctoral student in the NNP track, you will:
Develop skills to influence public policy through participation in professional organizations and health policy activities at the local, national, and global level.
Take courses in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and systems leadership.
Have clinical experiences in a large variety of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICU).
Assess and care for the critically ill infants in Level 2, 3 and 4 Neonatal ICUs.
Complete the NNP track in three years, including two summer semesters.
