The constitutional convention resulted in the various changes in the constitution, which would be followed by members from the northern and southern states. However, the process was not easy since compromises had to be done in an attempt to create a stable government. Such compromises focused on the issue of slavery since different states had different views regarding slave trade abolition. Some states were for the idea of abolishing the slave trade while others wanted to continue with the trade. The paper will focus on the reasons why slavery emerged as a national issue during the revolution and constitutional convention, and how it was dealt with by the constitution.
The issue of slavery came up during the constitutional revolution because there was a controversy as to whether they should be counted as a part of the population. The southern states were in agreement with this compromise since they knew that the slaves would increase their political power. The states had a large number of slaves, and therefore, if the slaves were allowed to vote, then the southern states would have more political power than the northern states. The states of the north were in disagreement with this decision. Therefore, the delegates agreed that each slave would be counted as three-fifths of a person (Digital History, 2013). As well, there was a controversy as to whether Congress should ban the slave trade or not. Most of the states had agreed to the abolition of the slave trade.
