Understanding the effectiveness and appropriateness of different assessment tools for students is important for any educator. On the one hand, it allows him to be able to use the best tool to determine the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of any student. On the other hand, it also helps him in building a course objective that would fit the individual needs of his students. In this article, the author would try to discuss the different assessments used in the IEP example provided. This includes the type of mathematics assessment used, higher-order processes, as well as other recommendations for the possible improvement of the assessment tool. All in all, the author believes that the use of IEPs could be crucial in making most of the student’s strengths.
Standardized Mathematics Assessments
Although the assessment tool covers almost every standard information that is needed to assess the student’s proficiency, it merely touches on his specific mathematic proficiency. Generally, the data taken from the MAPS (NWEA) data would show that the student is capable of accessing mathematics 6th-grade level. He can also perform complex processes such as inverse operations as well as persist in solving math problems. However, the assessment pointed out that the student is having difficulties in topics such as operations and algebraic thinking, geometry, real and complex number systems, and even statistics and probability. Overall, this places his mathematical proficiency at sixth (6th) grade equivalency as compared to his reading and language score, which falls under eight (8th) grade and tenth (10th) to eleventh (11th) grade equivalency, respectively. Overall, the author believes that although the standard IEP assessment is complete, the low student score necessitates a further assessment of possible interventions CITATION Jim18 \l 1033 (Jimerson, Stein...
