The criminal justice system is quite intricate. Over the years, much of the processes within the criminal justice system have centered on the collection of enough evidence, especially circumstantial, to put a suspect behind bars. While this has so often yielded the much-needed results of getting criminals off the streets, it has also had the problem of putting the wrong persons behind bars. With DNA testing, such errors have greatly reduced, as there is more accuracy in the determination of the criminals involved. However, the existence of the Alford plea has put everything on the balance. It places convicts in a dilemma (Blume & Helm, 2012). Prosecutors should be prohibited from offering the Alford plea to people who have wrongly been convicted for a crime.
Staying behind bars for whichever reason is punishment enough. It is even more painful, if the entire process was flawed and hence wrongful conviction. It is only a person who has experienced confinement who can really value the joy of freedom and do anything possible to ensure that he or she is free. Considering the natural human desperation for freedom, a person can make very wrong decisions, just to achieve it.
