Transformational leadership is a critical leadership theory where the leader constantly engages the followers toward change. The leader also creates a vision that inspires, guide, and transform the organization (Keskes et al., 2018). The change in transformational theory is crucial since it mobilizes the followers to gauge critical decisions and growth. The theory advocates the influence of the followers toward perceived capabilities. It also inspires individuals and organizations to achieve positive results. The workers also get autonomy in their roles and have adequate authority in decision-making. Therefore, the transformation induces positive change, bringing adequate development to the organization. Transformational leaders have distinct and robust behaviors which allow them to achieve better organizational results. Besides, job performance and morale are some aspects that transformational leadership promotes. The paper addresses a case of transformational leadership theory and its application in Microsoft.
Microsoft and Transformational Leadership
Microsoft is a known company that heavily considers a transformational approach. It is an American multinational corporation that develops specific products, including personal computers, electronics, and software (Microsoft, 2022). The co-founder was Bill Gates, who has observable transformational skills in company operations and engagement. Besides, the current CEO, Nadella Satya, also focuses on transformational leadership and has transformed the company into technical dominance. The CEO focuses on the workers' cultural transformation and constant engagement to achieve higher performance and growth. Therefore, with Nadella as the CEO, Microsoft applies a transformational approach in different ways to achieve higher growth and development.
The transformational approach has enabled Microsoft to achieve high technical dominance in 5 years. Nadella and his team initiated trajectory transformation in the company, which has enabled it to overtake Apple Inc. (Microsoft, 2022). The success of transformational leadership was based on the employees and the customers. For instance, after Nadella took over the company, the customers did not warmly embrace him; however, he transformed most products to suit the customers' interests in a short period. He transformed from Windows 8 to another advanced system, which caught the attention of many customers. He also transformed the company to embrace high-quality products, thus increasing the market share. Therefore, Microsoft considers customers in transformational growth.
The second group that Microsoft targets through the transformational approach is the employees. Nadella embraces specific transformational shifts to accommodate the employees. For instance, the employees in Microsoft were de-spirited due to lowered performance. However, with the reign of Nadella, the company has adequately transformed the values that boost employee morale leading to extensive growth and development.
