Cross-cultural refers to the interaction of persons from diverse backgrounds in the business world. It is also about comparing or dealing with at least 2 cultures or cultural areas. Diversity encompasses vital and interconnected aspects of human identity including age, religion, socio-economic status, ability, gender, citizenship, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality and race (Fine, 2011). Ethnocentrism refers to the inclination of viewing one’s own culture as being better or greater than another culture and applying one’s own cultural values to judge the beliefs and behaviours of people from different cultures. Intercultural refers to between diverse cultures. On the other hand, intracultural means within the same culture (Rawat & Basergekar, 2016). Multiculturalism is understood as the co-existence of many different cultures, in which culture consists of cultural, religious or racial groups and is manifested in patterns of thinking, customary behaviours, communicative styles, as well as cultural values and assumptions.

Culture shock essentially refers to an experience that someone might have when he or she goes to a cultural environment that differs from his or her own cultural environment (Mor, Morris & Joh, 2013). A person who is experiencing culture shock has a feeling of nervousness, doubt, and confusions as a result of being in a place, for instance a foreign nation, which totally differs from what that person is familiar with. In an organization, a manager should be concerned about culture shock since culture is considered as a big hindrance for new workers who are transitioning to new places of work (Fitzsimmons, 2013). The manager can mitigate culture shock and help workers manage culture shock.

Cultural identity is understood as the identity of a given culture, group or person, influenced by a person’s belonging to a culture or group (Lenartowicz, Johnson & Konopaske, 2014). In terms of cultural identity, I consider myself white, Christian, American, female, millennial generation, and straight in terms of sexual orientation. A manager needs to know about cultural identity within the organization because since he will be able to ensure that there is cultural diversity in the company with employees from diverse cultures employed at the organization.

A situation when I was uncomfortable around a person considered as different was when I was in a restaurant and three Muslim men speaking Arabic came into the restaurant and took a seat close to me. Apparently, they were immigrants from Iraq. I handled the situation by staying calm and never saying even a single word to them. I then finished my meal quickly and walked out. Generally, I am never comfortable around Muslims since most terrorists are Muslims and they kill innocent people and use their Koran to justify their killings against Christians.
