The following is a transcript from a video discussing Chapter 7 of the book above and address the topic of the discussion:
When we discuss the Atlantic history, we said that it began with the Age of Exploration and ended with the end of the slave trade. And right now I'd like to discuss the education of enslaved peoples and the early Atlantic history. A mistake that we make is to view this population enslaved people as being monolithic. We tend to stereotype, but they were extremely diverse from a coming from different tribes of people. And just as an example of the diversity of this people group, let's look at the example. The Atlantic Creoles and the Creoles were a diverse, even among themselves. Some of them were of pure African descent, yet some of them had European mixed background. And at the time they were referred to as mulattoes. Many of them when they came to the New World, they had a level of sophistication and that they served as translators to communicate from planters to the enslaved people who served on the plantations. And so there were various levels of education among the Atlantic Creoles. But among this enslaved people as a whole, education was, there were barriers to it. But it happened usually in their quarters, in their place that was at least to some degree their own, where they could hold ceremonies and traditions like dances, weddings and funerals. And it was through these ceremonies that they taught their culture to, they pass their culture down to their children. So there were many barriers to the education of enslaved people, and one of those was anti literacy loss. It's interesting to look at the trends with the degree to which planters were willing to teach. They're enslaved people to read and to calculate numbers. There were times when it wasn't a problem at all. It actually help them run the plantations. So they wanted to teach, enslave people to read and to calculate numbers. But when they would hear rumors of rebellions and they began to feel threatened, these anti literacy laws and the penalty for them would increase. And this of course, limited the development of education. So there was some learning from planter to slave. There was learning between slaves, but there is also learning between missionaries and slaves. Missionaries were sometimes allowed onto the plantation to teach enslaved people to read and to teach them Religion. An example of a missionary who helped to educate many enslaved people, not just in the Caribbean and in the new world, but also in Europe and in Africa was Rebecca. And I encourage you to read her story and to consider the impact that she made. Many people refer to her as the mother of modern missions. She was extremely influential in the origins and the development of the black church. She was born in the Caribbean, was kidnapped, made a slave. Her, the family that owned her freed her, and then she became a missionary. Mehrabian church went back to the plantations, teach enslaved people to read. When she went to Europe in Germany, she continued her education efforts. When she left to Europe, she went to Africa and in Ghana. She continued teaching African people there to read and taught them the Christian religion. And she died there. And I think of her commitment, her sense of social responsibility, that's one of the dispositions we discuss in the field of education, that all educators should have a sense of social responsibility and revert back a proton is an excellent example of that. And as we reflect on how she is modeled that for us, how do we carry out our social responsibility as educators?
