Literacy Intervention Plan for 3rd Grade

Coursework Instructions:

Many students struggle academically with literacy skills in ELA and across content areas because they are performing below grade level in reading and writing. The ability to assess students, analyze assessment data, and work with parents/guardians and other stakeholders to develop specific intervention plans is critical in helping all students achieve their academic goals. This type of planning and communication is also a critical part of the IEP writing process for students with exceptionalities. Clearly communicating information about student skills and proposed interventions to all stakeholders can ensure collaboration in the development and implementation of a plan.
Review the “SPD-485 Literacy Case Studies” and select a student that will be the focus of the assignment. Using the topic Resources, your own research, and the data provided in the case study, complete the “SPD-485 Literacy Intervention Plan” template as directed.
While APA Style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Literacy Intervention Plan
Selected Student: Student A Grade Level: 3rd

Current Performance Data:
Currently performing below grade level in literacy, Student A is a female student in the third grade. Her Lexile score is between 420 and 600, which means that she is reading below the grade-level average for third-graders. She struggled with basic reading abilities as seen by her performance on a phonics screener, which placed her in the 20th percentile. She also has trouble spelling, reading words with multiple syllables, and reading aloud; when she does so, she frequently omits punctuation and sounds robotic. Because of how poorly she reads, she performs below the standard for her grade, which emphasises the need for support and intervention that is specifically tailored to her needs.

State Literacy Standards:
1. The third-grade reading standard states pupils should be able to "read grade-level text with purpose and understanding."
2. Students should be able to "write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and clearly convey ideas and information" by the conclusion of the third grade, according to the writing standard.

Learning Objectives:
1. Reading Goal: By the conclusion of the third grade, Student A will have developed her reading abilities to comprehend and read texts at grade level.
2. Writing Goal: By the conclusion of the third grade, Student A will have honed her writing abilities to the point where she can create informative/explanatory writings that investigate a subject and effectively communicate ideas and facts.

Intervention Strategies
Reading Strategy:
Implement a program called "buddy reading," in which Student A reads for 15 minutes daily with a friend or an adult. Having a reading buddy may help with understanding, boost reading, and promote discussion about the book.
