Unit I Assignment Slide 3 Voicemail Transcript Hi Jerry! This is your OSHA’s Area Director. We received a non-formal complaint recently from one of your current employees. The complaint alleges that employees there are performing welding operations on stainless steel in an area with inadequate ventilation. This employee also states that they frequently “cough up” black sputum, and that they are worried about the health consequences caused by this lack of ventilation. The complaint further states that no air sampling has been performed to evaluate the employees’ exposures to welding fumes. And, that when asked for respirators, they were given “dust masks” with one strap, which were purchased at the local hardware store. The effectiveness of these dust masks for the exposure that is present is also in question. Dear OSHA Area Director,
I would like to thank you for your letter that you addressed to us raising your concerns regarding one of our employees. I went through the contents of your brief letter word by word, and I could pick out your complaint; one of our current employees was working (welding) in an unsafe working environment since there was inadequate ventilation in the working space. As you might have noticed, our company is in the services sector and we offer welding services, where we weld stainless steel products. For a long time, we have been in the business, and one of the rules and regulations is that adequate ventilation must be provided. Such ventilation is important as it allows the hazardous gases such as toxic gases, ultra-violet radiation, and toxic fumes produced during welding to escape from the working space. Therefore, we have constructed our workshop such that it allows maximum ventilation as a way of protecting our employees from such impacts. Therefore, I feel that your claims are null and void because we have evidence of adequate ventilation in our workshop.
