Chapter 11, “Ethical Issues in Couples and Family Therapy” is based on systems theory. In particular, systems theory perceives psychological issues as emanating from within a person’s intergenerational family system and present environment (Corey, Corey, & Callanan, 2011). Family therapists adopt a systematic perspective and use it as the fundamental concept in their practice. This chapter encourages therapists to view individuals’ behaviors from the society, community, and family perception. That way, they are likely to understand the problems faced by their clients better. In addition, the chapter examines the responsibility of therapists to clients, confidentiality, professional integrity and competence, responsibility to research participants, responsibility to the profession, advertising, financial arrangements, and contemporary professional problems.
