Read 3 or more of the articles provided for this activity. The articles are located under the files tab in the folder labeled literacy articles. You may also research your own articles and read those in addition to the three you chose from the provided list.
Choose a developmental age period (Infancy, Preschool, Middle Childhood, or Adolescence)
Choose a book that is developmentally appropriate for this age range. This can be a fiction or non-fiction book.
Develop an extension activity to encourage literacy development based on the book. Be sure that you utilize knowledge and research from the journal articles in developing your activity. Be creative and use your own strengths and interests.

‘The Cat in the Hat' by Dr. Seuss is a good book to teach children basic reading skills. Theodore Geisel or Dr. Seuss developed the story in 1957 to enable the USA education system to embrace the importance of reading among the preschool children (Saunders 37). The story is entertaining with good, and creative presentations simplified in a storyline that smoothly evokes children's adventure in learning. Mike Myer is the mischievous protagonist who has a hat with red and white stripes. Mike Myers continues to cause mischief at any place he visits. For example, both Conrad and Sally stay at home with their pet fish. However, Conrad starts to mess the house by riding down stairs. Kelly, his mum, is planning a party in the evening and the house has to remain clean to avoid being fired by her boss. Therefore, she commands the children not to go to the living room. Contrary, Mike Myers the Cat arrives and together with the children, they mess up the whole house and the particular living room.
