Question#1: How can focusing on health communication, policy and advocacy efforts on individual behaviors influence the health of the population?
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, focusing on health communication, advocacy and policy can greatly influence the healthcare industry because it is the only way to develop a strong relationship between the patients and doctors, a relationship that eventually helps patients recover from their diseases. Plus, this helps them acquire knowledge and creates awareness regarding health issues, beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions. It also prompts actions, demonstrates healthy skills, debunks misconceptions and myths, and enhances support for the services. For a decade or two, health communication, advocacy, and policy efforts have become validated disciplines and three major components of a successful health program. These are capable of bringing positive changes in one’s behavior as well as the entire society (Koplan, 2003).
Question#2: Why are surveillance systems important? How do they tie into health communications?
A surveillance system is designed to monitor different health events and demonstrates varying trends. It’s safe to say that without the surveillance system, the success of a healthcare organization is impossible. The same is the condition with health communication, making us realize that different surveillance systems should be implemented for better health communication in both public and private sector hospitals.
