I work in a health organization as a technical communicator. My role is to create a new software system to serve as a database which collects all essential records from laboratories, physicians, clinics, and hospitals from the region. Such records are highly confidential because they contain personal information, and therefore it is my job to keep and maintain the records confidentially.
Few months ago, I found a piece of information which placed me into an ethical dilemma. I found information that my sister’s fiancé has been diagnosed and tested positive with HIV. The information indicated that currently he is obtaining counseling and treatment for HIV at a certain local hospital. My sister and I are very close since we lost our mother because of cancer at a tender age. I am sure that my sister does not know that her fiancé is tested HIV positive, and I know that my sister’s wedding will take place in the next two months’ time. If I decided not to inform my sister about the issue, I will be keeping integrity and maintain my job. However, in this way, I will be putting my sister’s life and her marriage into risk.
