Procrastination’s Effects and Causes
Procrastination is the tendency to avoid accomplishing tasks that are restricted by time and postponing them to a future time (Steel and Klingsieck 37). The habit is often encountered in nearly all facts of life ranging from learning to working experience. In one’s lifetime, therefore, it is likely to procrastinate despite having the knowledge that the action might lead to far-reaching negative consequences. For instance, it is quite normal to keep delaying doing dreadful homework until little time is left, when it is barely possible to deliver the best results. In this light, therefore, it emerges that procrastination has its root causes and, consequently, has effects.
First, procrastination is caused by the proneness to succumb to pressure from peers. In high school, for instance, it is fairly difficult to escape the company of friends whenever they invite us to hang out with them. Occasionally, individuals have the fear of being criticized or victimized for being absent from planned social events or visits alongside their circle of friends. Additionally, procrastination may be caused by the belief in most people that they have to be in good moods or state of mind to do certain tasks. This propensity to rely on a perceived right mood leads people into deferring to perform certain tasks.
Moreover, procrastination is caused by the fear of failure. This phenomenon is more noticed among perfectionists who typically endeavor to achieve outstanding results that everyone can see. When they, unfortunately, fall short of their expectations by merely attaining average results, they succumb to stress or, sometimes, depression. Thus, delaying to take action becomes the cushion against the probable stress that might ensue when they fail. ...
