The CDC’s recommendations to the Early Care and Education facilities program are an essential framework for prevention of obesity in children. According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated one in every five children under five years old is overweight or obese. Further, it approximates that 60 percent of these young children, spend about thirty hours weekly in the care of others away from their parents particularly in ECE settings (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). These parameters include childcare, day care homes, pre-school and kindergarten. These early care and education facilities provide numerous opportunities for the implementation strategies outlined in the CDC program. If the recommendations are implemented, they would minimize the cases of childhood obesity, and motivate healthy living for the children up to adulthood.
There are several reasons as to why an ECE program is critical in implementing these recommendations. First, the major responsibilities of an early childhood education service are to introduce policies and practices that govern food and nutrition needs of the children as the Ministry of Health. Therefore, since this is their mandate, the introduction of the CDC guidelines would work to help these services develop and meet the proper guidelines and programs regarding nutrition and health of the children in their care (Corbett, Gratale, Ellis, Revere & Chang, 2014, p.9).
Secondly, the choices kids make on the options of food to consume and engaging in physical activities are predicated by the practices and measures introduced in their formal years.
