Question 1
Scott Geller's talk explores the inner aspects of motivation which are the driving force towards success and feeling of accomplishment. To begin with, Geller views the subject form the perspective of empowerment, arguing that there is a difference between being empowered and feeling empowered.  The latter, he says, is the source of motivation for many human beings as they internally feel the need to achieve something or to attain a certain status. However, Geller says that to determine whether an individual is empowered to achieve a certain goal, we need to ask them whether they can do it or have what it takes to accomplish the task, whether they believe it will work and whether the task is worth it. Geller focuses on the essentials of self-motivation referring to the factors that drive people towards success. It is true that self-motivation forms the greatest driving force as opposed to being pushed by rules or authorities as the latter chokes self-assessment of an individual's capabilities, strengths and weaknesses (Hutchins, 2008).
In his evaluation, Geller argues that for an individual to feel motivated, they have to seek success rather than avoiding failure. One could agree that to successfully reach our goals, social support is important and Geller underlines this saying that we can always learn from each other regardless of our different levels. From Geller's talk, some principles could be applied in leadership such in helping employees discover their weaknesses, strengths and capabilities in order to fit in the organizational set up. Another important aspect of leadership is learning from each other which I could apply in teamwork and consultative leadership in which as a leader, I ought to give members a chance to give their invaluable contributions towards achieving specific objectives (Provitera, 2012).
