Fences: Troy Maxson
August Wilson produced a masterpiece with the play Fences. From the start to finish, the play delves deep into issues that often plague the society with the disconnect between fathers and sons among the main issues highlighted in the play. Of all the characters in the play, Rose Maxson is the one that appears to change the most from the start of the play to the end. From the start of the play, Rose is depicted as a perfect housewife who loves her husband and appears to stick by him in everything. For a significant part of the play, she appears to be by her husband’s side and never wavers in her support of him. However, this is not to say that she was a pushover and that her husband had an upper hand over her. Rose appears to be a strong mother who is ready to take her husband to task over certain remarks as well as some decisions he makes. From the start, one can tell that she is a mother who cares for her family and is ready to do everything to keep it intact. However, as the story proceeds and she soon realizes that the eighteen years she gave her husband might have been for nothing, things take a dramatic turn and a hurt and betrayed Rose develops.
From the start, Rose is shown as loyal and a woman who loves her husband. She is ready to do everything to keep her family and it is clear that she is the same person who tamed Troy and made him realize from early on that she was no pushover. In one instance, as Troy was talking to his friend Bono, he says that when he met her, he was not ready for marriage. “I latched on to her and told her – I’m gonna tell you the truth – I told her, “baby, I don’t wanna marry, I just wanna be your man.” Rose told me…tell him what you told me, Rose.” At this point, Rose responds with a statement that shows that she is responsible for taming Troy’s wild ways. She said, “I told him if he wasn’t the marrying kind, then move out the way so the marrying kind could find me.” This shows that Rose knew what she wanted and was not shy to speak about it.
