A Farewell to Arms
The story of the farewell to arms reveals a lot of themes and among them is the theme of love. This theme is brought out by the love between Henry and Catherine. Hemmingway has divided the novel into five sections, with each section revealing new facts about the love between Henry and Catherine. Henry was a lieutenant while Catherine was a nurse whereby nature brought them together. In addition, their love undergoes a lot of difficulties, and the author has used the various characters and themes to reveal the fact that the love was tragic.
To begin with, Hemmingway has created the theme of love to show that regardless of the fact that Henry was a womanizer, he was still going to meet a lady that would change his life for the best. Therefore, this theme creates some level of curiosity among the readers because they would love to know what became of Henry. In most cases, it is difficult for a womanizer to change and therefore, this suspense helps in propelling the story forward. In the first section of the novel, Hemmingway develops the character of Rinaldi as a mutual friend to Henry and Catherine. It is through this character that he introduces the love between Henry and Catherine. Rinaldi is a surgeon and probably knows a lot about Catherine from the workplace. Therefore, he thinks that she is the best option for Henry and introduces her to him (Hemmingway 2012). At this point, Henry still has the mentality of a womanizer, and he tries to seduce Catherine regardless of the fact that he does not want her. Therefore, this is an indication that their love is a tragedy because a person who has genuine feelings for another would not seduce them k owing that nothing constructive will come out of the relationship. It seems that Henry has a divided mind about love and thus, this cannot be defined as romance but the beginning of a tragedy. Ina real-life situation, romantic love begins by both people having love feelings for one another. They then nurture the feelings until they are deeply in love.
In addition, Hemmingway introduces the theme of war to further illustrate the manner in which the love between Henry and Catherine is a tragedy. During the battle of the Caporetto, henry disobeys authority and kills one of the sergeants. He is then taken for a trial whereby he would be executed for the crime that he has committed. According to Henry, this would be a huge blow to Catherine because she is already expecting their baby. As well, this is an indication of the misfortunes following their love. Instead, they should be happy and probably living together as they await to welcome the baby. The use of death in a situation whereby the characters are supposed to be in love is a signal that something bad is coming their way. They are already living far from each other and, given the fact that Henry is a womanizer, then there is a possibility that the little romance between the couple is bound to be broken. The theme of war does not bring a good ending to the love between Catherine and Henry because, after Henry learns that he will be executed for his crime, he escapes the trial.
