Several days ago, I watched a caricature that depicted two men in a conversation. One man says that he loves reading and reads for about 3 hours daily. And his favorite book is Facebook. As we all know, Facebook is not a book that can present us with many stories and teach us a lot. It is just a social networking platform that helps people in different regions communicate freely. This conversation may seem a little bit entertaining and ridiculous but also thought-provoking on second thought. It intends to inform us of the magnitude to which the giant social network hsignificantly impacted our daily reading habits.
In the article Is Google Making Us Stupid? What the internet is doing to our brains, author Nicholas Carr mainly talks about the negative impacts of the internet on people's brains and how people rely on the internet. The internet is quietly changing the way people read, from careful reading in the past to fast browsing at present. "People used to regard it easy to focus on long and hard articles and books, which can help us form the ability of concentration and contemplation" (Carr, 2008). However, with the advancement of computer technology, our cognitive thinking pattern has been significantly changed. Although Internet reading can save a lot of time, it also dramatically reduces the depth of content. And the author provided examples that he has a difficult time reading, and the people around him are also facing this problem. This phenomenon is relatively common nowadays. The internet provides convenience for our lives in many aspects. However, it also brings some harmful effects on our lives and reduces our ability and patience to learn.
I agree with the author's perspective, which also reminds me of my own experience concerning reading. When I was young, I loved reading, and I have read many ancient Chinese poems and foreign classics. At that time, my mother used to take me to the bookstore. There were various physical books. Sometimes we would stay there for a long time even if we didn't purchase any. Apart from us, there were many other adults and children reading books. I can't remember exactly when my dislike and impatience for reading started as described by the author. While in high school, the literature teacher asked us to read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. When I was reading, I often got angry because I could easily read the wrong line and remember the story plot. Besides, Shakespeare's works seemed a little difficult for me to understand. There were so many words and phrases I didn't comprehend. In addition, I felt uninspired to spend too much time reading physical books. Also, I didn't want to read the book and concentrate on the plots and twists of the protagonists. I would also become nervous and irritated when I read long sentences, especially those hard to understand, not connecting them to the plots. Again, I didn't want to study the book intensely beyond my reading level. When it came to similar books written in other languages, again, I reluctant to read them though I could turn to some electric devices to help me understand.
