Despite Ernie Davis living a short life and never playing at a professional game, his life and the impact it had in the society still has a significant influence beyond his time on earth. The life Davis lived was a purposeful life, which influenced institutions and value system of the USA in numerous ways. His achievement in winning the Heisman Trophy as the first African American and the subsequent role in the civil rights movement is profound. The paper seeks to examine how Davis Ernie`s life experiences and actions were significant not just for the generation and times he lived, but for the posterity of progress and struggles he advocated for. Accordingly, the paper will examine his life and times, the football talent and career, and the achievements he made. The life history and engagement of Davis was indeed significant to the extent that he inspired generations, influenced societal values and engaged in the civil rights movement.
Davis Ernie was born in Pennsylvania State, at New Salem. His father passed away when he was young after being killed in an accident shortly after Davis was born. The mother Avis Marie Fleming was not able to raise him alone. Thus he was raised from fourteen months old by his maternal grandparents. When he was 12 years, he rejoined his mother and stepfather in New York, where in the course of his education, he excelled in basketball, baseball, and football while still in grade school. As a child, just like many other children today, he faced parental challenges, while fighting racism and academic excellence all at the same time. The background from which Davis came from is familiar territory to most people, and at one time, May Weather a legendary wealthy boxer, acknowledged how coming from a poor background is an obstacle to many life success thus poverty must be fought. Despite the poverty, racism and family issues, in his own words days before his death, Davis said he gained by doing the very thing he would love to do over and over again. At the time of his death, he was just 23 years of age and succumbed to leukemia.
Ernie Davis is remembered as the first African-American or black man to win the coveted Heisman Trophy in 1961, and the significance of the award cannot be underestimated.
