Quality and productivity are important concepts under the lean philosophy in any manufacturing sector. The lean philosophy emphasizes on elimination of waste within a chain of production. The major tenet for this philosophy is that any expenditure of resources that does not culminate into value creation is wasteful and should be eliminated. Quality has a direct correlation to productivity because as the quality of a product increases, less time is needed to monitor and correct the errors or fix the mistakes. Instead, the manufacture process gets sufficient time, which translates to more productivity. Therefore, quality under the lean philosophy, means using less resources to maximize on the output.
Quality of a product can be increased in various ways, one of them being through Total Quality Management (TQM). TQM is a system of management that demands that every member of staff must maintain high working standards in all aspects of the company’s operations. Such a process requires an overhaul of the systems to retain only necessary resources and behaviors that will result in the company achieving its objectives. TQM focuses on increasing the competitiveness of an organization by improving the quality of the product or services (Sadikoglu, & Olcay, 2014). To achieve the desired quality, the organization engages in continuous improvement of the process with an ultimate goal of improving productivity. Therefore, the organization can utilize the process of continuous improvement to increase both the quality of products and productivity.
