In Roe v. Prairie City-Monroe School District filed at Jasper County Civil Court in 2013, the school was accused of ignoring allegations of bullying by its former student (Public Justice, 2016). The unnamed plaintiffs claimed that the school, as well as the district superintendent, failed to protect their 12-year-old son from harassment and bullying while he was a student at the school (Public Justice, 2016). The ninth-grade student who perpetuated the harassments made several requests to see the genitals of the boy not only in locker room showers but even on Facebook. The presence of Facebook exchanges in which the ninth grade harassed the boy sexually shows that social media played a role in the victimization. Despite this, the incidences were dismissed as not actionable by the superintendent and the mother of the boy was told to destroy the Facebook exchange. As such, the case was dismissed and a settlement of $100,000 made by the school district’s insurer.
